Developing mild, efficient and economical methods for the introduction of fluorine atom in Organic molecule. Key Words:Organic Synthesis, Medicinal Chemistry, Fluorination Chemistry

Dr. Girish Chandra received doctoral degree from Department of Chemistry, IIT Bombay. After completion of Ph.D., he joined Tata College Chaibasa, Ranchi University as Assistant Professor (Permanent Position). After serving one year in Tata College, he moved to Ewha Womans University, Seoul, S. Korea to pursue postdoctoral Research. Dr. Girish Chandra published research papers in peer-reviewed journals like Organic Letters, Journal of Medicinal Chemistry etc.

Dr. Girish Chandra is a synthetic Organic Chemist. During his PhD he developed a novel methodology for the synthesis of highly functionalized bicyclo[2.2.2]octenone which was utilized for the construction of basic framework of bicyclo[3.3.0], bicyclo[4.2.0]octanoids, homoisotwistane carbon framework (tricyclo[5.3.1.03,8]undecane). He completed the formal total synthesis of ceratopicanol and synthesized the basic framework of ptychanolide.

As a postdoctoral fellow he was involved with the synthesis of modified nucleosides for the development of HCV, HIV and anti cancer drugs. Developed a novel methodology for the synthesis of vinylic fluoride, which was utilised for the synthesis of homo fluoroneplanocin A. This compound was found to be effective anti-cancer drug which is comparable to gemcitabine, widely used anti-cancer medicine (Organic Letters, 14, 2134-2137, 2012 and US Patent 2013/0310403 A1).

Research Interest: The introduction of a fluorine atom into an organic substrate can have a profound effect on its physical, chemical and biological properties. And this has been applied very successfully to the development of a number of fluorine containing pharmaceuticals. From the last few decades, there has been significant development of fluorine chemistry which leads to discovery of many drugs which has at least one fluorine atom in the molecule. So far, present 20% drugs belong to fluorinated drug category.

Despite importance of fluorinated compound, introduction of fluorine atom in organic molecule is very difficult. Although many methods have been developed in last twenty years, but we are still waiting for a reliable and universal method of introduction of fluorine in the organic molecule. And due to this ‘Fluorination Chemistry’ is one of the hot topics in synthetic organic chemistry.

  • We have interest to develop mild, efficient and economical methods for the introduction of fluorine atom in Organic molecule.
  • Methods will be utilised for the synthesis of fluorinated nucleosides, fluorinated aromatic compounds, peptidomimetic, and many more pharmaceutically important pharmacophores.
  • We will also explore the fluorination Chemistry in crystal engineering and material science.
