World Environment Day celebrated at CUSB
The Ecoclub of the Central University of South Bihar (CUSB) celebrated the World Environment Day on 5th June 2018 as a reaffirmation of national efforts towards sustainable development and mainstreaming environmental concerns in the agenda of CUSB. The activities were focused on the Beat the Plastic pollution, mobile exhibition of plants and water conservation. The programme was commenced with marathon by student, faculty and University staff.
Dr. Ram Kumar Head of the Centre for Environmental Sciences explained the objectives of the marathon, and necessity of avoiding/restricting single use of plastic, asked people to introspect how many plants they planted. A skit was played in the presence of visitors at the main gate of the Sanjay Gandhi Biological Garden to awaken common people about plantation and impacts of plastics on environmental and human health.
The marathon was started off by Prof. R. S. Rathore the Dean of School Earth, Biological and Environmental Sciences, of the Central University of South Bihar. While marching on towards the Central University of South Bihar, from the Gate No. 1 of the Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park the participants also interacted with locals, parents and students near Kendriya Vidyala and demonstrated the impacts of plastics.
Following the marathon further program a lecture series was inaugurated by Prof. Arun Kumar Sinha, Professor-in-Charge Patna Campus and Dean of School of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Sciences. The guests, particularly the State committee and life members of the Vigyan Bharti also joined the activities.
In the beginning Dr. Ram Kumar, Head, Centre for Environmental Sciences welcomed the guests, introduced the subjects and explained various activities of Centre for Environmental Sciences and Ecoclub of the CUSB. The Keynote speaker was Prof. Arvind Kumar, the Head of the Department of mechanical Engineering, Birla Institute of Technology Patna, explained various alternatives of plastics and use of plastics in road construction, building construction and production of fuels as an alternative of fossil fuel.
Prof. R. S. Rathore thanked Centre for Environmental Sciences and praised for organizing such activities even during summer vacation. The Chairperson Prof. Arun Kumar Sinha explained the relevance of the Environment Day, human ethics and responsibilities to safe guard our environment and ecosystem. He explained the need of sustainable development for existence of the human species. Prof. Arun Kumar Sinha explained how to protect our environment, how to preserve our natural resources among which the most important is water because un-producible and on future it might be possible that the third world war will be for water. He thanked the Ecoclub volunteers and Vigyan Bharti for organizing such successful event.
The lecture series was followed by the student’s activities i.e. competitions on live demonstration of projects on alternative to plastics, Essay writing competition, slogan making competition and audiovisual presentation were organized focusing on plantation, water conservation and restricting single use of plastics. Separate Judges were declared for each competition and results were declared immediately after the event.
