Dr. Umesh Kumar Singh has received his postdoctoral training from Department of Civil Engineering, Kansas State University, Manhattan, USA. He has received Ph.D. degree (Environmental Science), M.Phil (Environmental Science) and M. Sc. (Environmental Science) from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi and B.Sc. (Hon’s) in Chemistry from Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi.
Dr. Umesh Kumar Singh is Professor in the Department of Environmental Science, School of Earth, Biological and Environmental Sciences, Central University of South Bihar, Gaya. He has vast experience of teaching and research spanning over 15 years. Prior to joining Central University of South Bihar, he served at the Integrated Science Education and Research Centre (ISERC), Institute of Science, Visva-Bharati, Santiniketan, West Bengal for 11 years. His fields of specialization are biogeochemistry, hydrogeology, geochemistry, water and soil pollution, solid waste management and climate change. He has done extensive research in the areas of arsenic and fluoride pollution, heavy metals pollution in groundwater and surface water bodies and its health effects, river geochemistry, and impact of climate change on water resources. He has to his credit many research papers published in refereed international and national journals/ edited books. He has also a patent in the field of fluoride removal from the contaminated groundwater. He has supervised many students at Ph.D. and master’s level. He has been invited to deliver talks in many institutions across India and abroad.
He has received several awards and fellowships such as BOYSCAST fellowship under which he traveled University of California, Berkley, The George Washington University, Iowa State University and City University of New York, USA, and Japan Government fellowship to do research work in the University of Tokyo. He has also received University Grant Commission (UGC) Junior Research Fellowship and Lectureship in Environmental Science granted through a test conducted at national level for doing research anywhere in India for a period of five years.
Awards and achievement: Prof. Singh has served as a reviewer in several journals such as Chemosphere, Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety, Journal of Geochemical Exploration, Land Degradation & Development, Scientific Reports, Water Resources Management etc. and he has been associated with a number of reputed scientific bodies like Indian Geological Congress, Indian Association of Hydrologists, and The Indian Science Congress Association etc.
