CUSB's laboratory assistant Dr. Raj Kumar Sardar found scientific ways to fight plastic pollution through research

Dr. Raj Kumar Sardar, a laboratory assistant working in the Department of Environment, Central University of South Bihar (CUSB), has discovered bacteria that eat plastic through his research. This research achievement of Dr. Sardar has been published in the high standard international journal 'World Journal of Microbiology and Biotechnology' published from Netherlands by Springer Nature. On this achievement, Vice Chancellor Prof. Kameshwar Nath Singh, Registrar Prof. Narendra Kumar Rana and Prof. Rizwanul Haque, Dean, School of Earth and Biological Sciences, Prof. Pradhan Parth Sarathi, Head of Department, Department of Environment, Dr. Nitish, Dr. Krishna Prakash, Dr. Prashant etc. have congratulated and wished Dr. Sardar.

Dr. Sardar has been selected to present his research summary at the Scientific Convention to be held in Los Angeles, USA on the global platform in June 2025. Dr. Sardar is also a member of the world's largest and oldest scientific society - American Society for Microbiology. With a view to biodegradation and bio-mass production of everyday plastic under the concept of waste-to-wealth, Dr. Sardar has discovered the plastic-eating bacteria Micrococcus flavus. During research in India's high-level CSIR laboratory, Dr. Sardar found that this bacteria resides on the surface of plastic in the form of a thin membrane biofilm, and slowly decomposes the complex polymer plastic into microscopic monomers through enzyme activity and reduces the weight of plastic by about 2 percent in 30 days by using it as a carbon source. This new bacteria was obtained from the Indian western sea area, whose identification, their unique plastic-eating properties and plastic decomposition were confirmed using software and various scientific instruments.
