Three-Day National Training Programmee On Social Defenec Issues For Social Work Educators, Dept. of Sociological Studies, March 10-12, 2025

 
Day 1:- 
The Department of Sociological Studies organised The First Three-Day National Training Programme on Social Defence Issues for Social Work Educators, 2025 which was sponsored by the National Institute of Social Defence (NISD), Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, New Delhi. The event comprised of mainly three sessions - inaugural sessions, presentation and discussions and valedictory session. The inaugural session commenced with Chandanam (Tilak), followed by deep-prajwalan (Lighting of lamp), kulgeet and felicitation. Mr Sanjay Pawar, NISD, New Delhi was the chief guest of today’s event and was felicitated by Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor Professor Kameshwar Nath Singh. Professor M. Vijay Kumar Sharma, the Head of the Department of the Sociological Studies felicitated Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor Professor Kameshwar Nath Singh, Central University of South Bihar, Gaya.  Dr Haresh Narayan Pandey, the convenor of this training programme felicitated Dr Ravendra Singh Jadaun, a Senior Advocate UP High Court, the resource person of the event. Dr Samapika Mohapatra felicitated Prof M Vijay Kumar Sharma, and in last Dr Rahul Dubey, teaching in the Sant Shree Rainathdas PG College, Salempur felicitated Dr Haresh Narayan Pandey.   The event formally started with welcome address of Professor M Vijay Kumar Sharma in which he congratulated Mr Sanjay Pawar and Dr Jadaun for their participation and exemplary work which they are doing for upliftment of the vulnerable sections of Indian society.   He stated further that both theoretical and practical knowledge is essential to handle contemporary social defence issues. He suggested that social workers should become agents of social change in mobilising collective actions. He talked of evidencebased action intervention and requested to join hands to make a more inclusive and equitable society. Dr Haresh Narayan Pandey, the convenor of this training programmme briefly introduced the theme. He highlighted that social defence is a comprehensive approach aiming to safeguard society by addressing social vulnerabilities of elderly, drug addicts, transgender, beggars, etc.  He highlighted the role of NISD in supporting educators and practioners in creating social rehabilitation modules. Dr Jadaun spoke about relevance of applied knowledge for social defence, and also, mentioned about vulnerable sections in India like children as most vulnerable followed by third gender, elderly persons, women, and men. The Chief guest, Mr Sanjay Pawar mentioned that government alone cannot do grassroot work for that social workers  are urgently need.   He told us that NISD has sanctioned a Beggary House to Gaya Municipal corporations.  He highilighted importance of transgenders in Mahabharat in winning the Dharma Yuddha by favouring Pandavas. Transgender thinks and acts  from both male and female mind or point of view.  Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kameshwar Nath Singh ji stated that nobody can live without society as it gives us name, identity and peoples support. Nowadays the understanding education has been greatly changed as it was earlier used for mukti but today it is used for niyukti. He emphasised on the fact that Indian society does not lack resources but it requires men who can work for bringing change. The occasion was also marked with the auspicious presence of  Professor Pranav Kumar, Dean School of Social Science and Policies;  Professor Pawan Kumar Mishra, DSW of the University, Professor Ravi Kant, Dean School of Education, Mr Ajay Pratap Singh, President Briddha Ashram, Konch Gaya along with  Dr Samapika Mohapatra, Dr Jitendra Ram, Dr Priya Ranjan, Dr Parijat Pradhan, Dr Kabeer AP from the Department.  Dr Samapika Mohapatra from the Department proposed the vote of thanks. The participants in the programme were more than sixty which included various students like research scholars, MSW students, Master students from Sociology, History, Political Science, Commerce, Psychology, Geography, Economics, Law and Governance, Media and Mass Communication, Education etc. and faculties from several Departments. The programme was anchored by two research scholars Ms Sakshi Priya and Manisha from the Department and concluded with National Anthem.   Both Mr Sanjay Pawar and Dr Jadaun have taken four sessions on anti-human trafficking, beggary, social defence and Bhartiya Nyaya Samhita in post lunch sessions.

Day 2:-

On the second day the first resource person Dr Ravendra Singh Jadaun, senior Advocate spoke on the  Bhartiya Nyaya Samhita which was  formulated on the changing  need of the Indian society. It was earlier  named as Bhartiya Danda Samhita  because of  colonial mind wanted  to rule us but  now the new Government  changed  it  Bhartiya Nyaya Samhita that  gives  space to  self -ratification to  those who wanted to reform themselves. He also stated that if anybody is convicted in lower court then he could apply for mercy petition  in district court followed by Double Bench, High Court and Supreme Court. If he  is not satisfied with it the he could go to the President of India   and also   can approach to the International Court of Justice. Prof S F Chandra Shekhar from Osmania University elaborated the meaning of Social Defence and its relationship with social worker  by saying that when there in breakdown of interaction  among people then it results  in social problems that can require social defence.  It focuses on rehabilitation, correctional services, and preventative intervention in society. He highlighted the roles of National Institute of Social Defence (NISD) in ensuring social defence in the society.  Prof Manu Singh from Banasthali University, Rajasthan on Aging in Indian in which  she defined aging  by involving all social, economical, physical and psychological process of life and becoming older until death.  She focused four aspect of aging- biological, social, chronological and  psychological and  indicated  the role of UN  in the first international action plane on aging in Vienna in 1982  which gave four themes of – independence, participation, care and self-fulfilment and dignity. In last she  talked  of health and wellness, community engagement, workplace inclusion, media representation and smart aging  as coping mechanism  for this problem of  aging. She concluded the session by highlighting that oled age is a sign of success and hope, and not of alarm in life. The  anchors of the session were Supriya and Abhishek  Prasad and  ended with hi-tea.

Day 3:-

On final and third day the first session began with Prof. SF Chandrashekar, Department of Social Work, Osmania University in which he spoke about Breaking the Chains: Combating Drug Abuse amongst Indian Youth. In his session he discussed about the effects of drug abuse on family; individuals physical and mental health and society.  He also discussed about the preventive solutions regarding drug abuse by formulating stronger drug laws; regulating online selling and purchase; access to de-addiction centres and public awareness campaigns. He also spoke about encouraging open communication in the family by involving parents; promoting healthy activities like sports and recreational activities and skill training alongside early identification and intervention by focusing on role of social educators. He encouraged to collaborate with civil society organizations, public institutions and counselling centres. 


This session was followed by an interactive session by Mr Ajay Pratap Singh, the founder of Bridha Ashram, Conch, Gaya. He spoke about the evolution of his Bridha Ashram where more than 50 inmates from across Gaya and other surrounding districts reside. He also highlighted that service to humanity and parents is the biggest virtue. He also mentioned that service should be selfless towards the society. He also highlighted that real love lies in being humane. He concluded his session by saying that real social work can only take place if we immerse ourselves in service to society and stay with social workers. 


This session was followed by an interactive presentation coordinated by Dr Samapika Mohapatra in which 5 teams participated on 5 themes. The participants were divided into 5 groups where they shared their reflections on Social Defence issues by making a presentation on – Beggary, Drug Abuse, Elderly Persons, Transgenders and Human Trafficking. All 5 themes were shared on the basis of understanding of the issues, identification of the isssues and addresal of the issues as social work educators. 


This session was followed by the felicitation and valedictory ceremony in which Prof. Pawan Kumar Mishra, Dean Students Welfare ; Prof. Pranav Kumar, Dean of the School of Social Sciences and Policy; The Controller of Examinations, Dr. Shanti Gopal Pain; Dean, School of Education, Dr Ravi Kanta Singh ; The Head of the Department of Sociological Studies, Prof. M Vijay Kumar Sharma ; the Convener of the Three Day Training Programme,  Dr. Haresh Narayan Pandey graced the occasion. Prof. Anil Kumar Singh Jha, Dr Samapika Mohapatra, Dr Parijat Pradhan, Dr Priya Ranjan, Dr Rinky  and Dr APA Kabeer  alongwith other faculties from various departments, university dignitaries and students were present during todays  training programme. Dr Haresh Narayan Pandey delivered the Vote of Thanks which was followed by the singing of the National Anthem by all the attendees.
