Environmental Science hosts an invited lecture on Discharge Characteristics of the Lost Saraswati River

The Department of Environmental Science at Central University of South Bihar (CUSB), Gaya, successfully organized an invited lecture on the topic "A Glimpse into Discharge Characteristics of the Lost Saraswati River." The lecture was delivered by the distinguished expert Dr. Kumar Gaurav, Associate Professor from Department of Earth and Environmental Science, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Bhopal. Dr. Gaurav is a renowned expert in environmental hydrology and riverine systems, provided an in-depth analysis of the hydrological patterns and discharge characteristics of the ancient Saraswati River—a subject that continues to intrigue both scholars and environmentalists.
The lecture discusses the finding of a study conducted to quantify the flow discharge and width of the ancient lost river Saraswati. This river has been cited at several places in Rig Veda and in several other Vedic literatures. The lost Saraswati River has been described as a large river in the plains of North-West India that used to flow from the Himalayas to the Arabian Sea. It has been suggested over a century ago that the Saraswati was a large river that flowed in the Sutlej-Yamuna interfluve, a region that is now devoid of any such large river system. This study, used satellite remote sensing data and fluvial geomorphology to answer the following questions: was the lost Saraswati a large river? How much discharge does it use to carry? What used to be its width?

The lecture attracted enthusiastic audience, including faculty members, researchers, and students from various disciplines. The Head, Department of Environmental Science, Prof. Pradhan Parth Sarthi, presented a token of appreciation to Dr. Kumar Gaurav, acknowledging his valuable contribution to the academic community at CUSB. It was appreciated by the departmental faculty member, Prof. Ram Kumar, Dr. Rajesh Kumar Ranjan, Dr. N. L. Devi and Dr. Soma Giri. The successful organization of the seminar could be possible because of Dr. Prashant, Coordinator, Seminar Committee and a team of the organizing committee members of Ph. D. studnets namely Akriti, Prabhat, Shubham, and Avinash. Their coordinated efforts ensured the smooth execution of the event.
